Enough is enough about Gender-Based Violence in Namibia

Gender-based violence is common in Namibia. Although it is difficult to get comprehensive data on the phenomenon, Healthy Survey (2013) revealed  that a third of married women have been beaten, forced to have sex, or been psychologically abused by their husbands or partners. Cases were a result of alcohol abuse and result of men's jealousy provoked by their partners' interactions with other men.

How can we help victims of gender based violence?

-  We need to believe the person
- Listen with compassion and please do not judge
- Offer practical support, you can accompanying the person to the police station
-  Share the gender based violence number 061 2095329, so that they can call to get help

Gender-based violence , or GBV, is one of the most oppressive forms of gender inequality, posing a fundamental barrier to the equal participation of women and men in social, economic and pollical sphere.

Gender-based violence will only stop in our country when society stands up together and says it will not happen anymore.

    We shouldn't conform GBV to women only, as men in our societies also go through it. It is just that they don't report it oftenly as women does, because society will paint them with the image of a weakling.

    Namibian men should normalize understanding that marriage doesn't mean you have control over your wife😪, although you are married, your rights still remain the same. Being married doesn't mean that the man can just get sex anytime they feel like, NO!!! If the wife doesn't want to do it, and you do it by force it's called rape. Please let's love and respect our wives.

    It's so unfortunate that not every woman being abused by a man can actually report it, because some women get certain benefits from men, so they suffer in silence. Any suggestions how these women can be helped?
